Sultry Suzanne

The lightly-veiled nude painting that still graces the room that was once reserved for Louis XIII is reputedly a portrait of the great and virtuous Suzanne de Gramont, wife of the last Marquis de Montpezat who legged the château to her upon his death in 1619. Her love for art was commensurate to her virtue, and she reputedly had over twenty paintings created for the arrival of Louis XIII at the château in 1621. One of those was this nude portrait of herself. We can perhaps imagine the king in contemplation of the lady of the house during the sultry summer nights. No doubt he was too busy with his battle.
